Hey pal✋, hope you are having a splendid day. We feel glad that you found a way to our CanDyKlickZ blog. This is the small place in cloud space where we share our mobile photographic📱 collection with some interesting😍 and useful👏 information, creative ideas, and inspirational thoughts. We have overwhelmed🙏 by your response that received for our previous posts. Thank you so much for your love and we are expecting the same for upcoming posts.

In our last post “Fly on High”, we shared interesting facts and importance of flies which belong to diptera order. Here, we are back with a new candyography story about the dragonfly. The fascinating pieces of information and myths about dragonflies are presented here with our mobile clicks.😻

Dragonfly

Do dragonflies look like a dragon❓❓ Does it have any similar characteristics like a dragon❓ If not, then how did they get this name❓ Have you ever puzzled about this❓ I hope your answer will be “YES”. These are the questions got stuck on my mind when I decided to write about dragonflies.

Unfortunately😒, I couldn’t find exact reason behind the name of a dragonfly because there is no definitive reference available to find the origin of its name. The earliest reference available for the name is available in the book called “Sylva Sylvarum, or a Naturall Historie: In Ten Centuries” by Francis Bacon which is published on 1960😇. But there is no exact explanation for the origin of the name. It is a mystery, but there are so many folktales are available. In Romanian folktale, the dragonfly was the horse of St. George which was later changed into a big flying insect by the curse of a devil. In Romanian, “drac” is the word used for a “devil” or “dragon”😵. So, people start calling it as a dragonfly. There are lots of stories are speculated and most of them are related to the religious and cultural aspects. Above all that, each tale ended up giving some new names like Devil’s needle, Devil’s Eye, Devil’s Needle, Eye snatcher, Snake doctor, Horse stinger, Devil’s riding horse, Eye poker, adder bolt, etc.,. In some culture, dragonflies are considered an evil creature.😱😱😱

Dragonflies are belonging to the order and infraorder as Odonata and Anisoptera respectively. Odonata means tooth but dragonflies don’t have teeth instead it has strong mandibles to crush the prey. Dragonflies have two pairs of elegant and transparent or color patched wings called as hindwings and forewings. The wings have a multi veined complex design. The hindwings of the dragonflies are broader than the forewings. Two larger compounded eyes, each with around 24000 lenses😎 called ommatidia. It has an elongated body with 10 abdominal segments and three terminal appendages at a segment 10. Dragonfly species are in several colors🌈.

Life of Dragonfly: Accept as it is and live it👍✌

A big message from the life of a dragonfly. We have been told from the day we were born that life is a precious thing, you have to chase your dreams to succeed in life, always be the first, be an extraordinary person, blah blah blah, run for your life and so on😰. If everyone becomes an extraordinary person, then being extraordinary becomes normal😛. In that case, how will you define extraordinary❓

Life is not about being an extraordinary person or chasing your life😐, instead just accept as it is😇. Just accept what life brings and lives it. If it brings some struggles then just fight back💪, enjoy at happy moments😘, laugh at shames😁, etc.,. The way you manage and developing yourself on the situations decides your future. Nothing else. It is impossible for us change anything until we accept it.

Dragonflies life cycle is a perfect example for us to learn how to live our life. These little dragons look amazing with different color patches, shape and size. The flying pattern of the dragonflies grabs our attention and it will mesmerize us. But, do you know? It has to cross three hard phases such as egg, nymph, and teneral to reach that dragonfly shape. But the interesting fact is that, after surpassing all these difficult phases, it can live only for few months as an adult dragonfly. It’s about 3 to 6 months🙀🙀🙀.

The female dragonflies lay eggs in or near ponds, lakes, stream, or the plants that floating in water or the place covered by water. Some species submerges completely in the lake or pond to deposit an egg. So, male dragonflies help the females to pull out from the water. The egg is the first stage of the lifecycle. It is a very difficult phase where it doesn’t have any control over it. So, there is a possibility of getting eaten by other insects😞😞😞.

It probably takes two weeks to hatch. Once the eggs are hatched, it moves to the second stage called nymphs. It is a payback time💪. Dragonflies are not only a terrestrial predator; they are also an aquatic predator. They eat warms, small fishes, tadpoles, mosquito larvae, and some time other nymphs. In this stage the nymphs don’t look that much attractive like as an adult dragonfly. It spends most of its lifetime in underwater as a nymph from 1 to 5 years and it varies according to the species. The dragonfly nymphs molt their skins 8 to 17 times before reaching the adulthood😵😵😵.

When they are ready for next stage as an adult, it has to prepare its respiration system to breath air. So, on the night time, it comes to the surface of the water and stays stationary with it heads out. When it is ready for the next state of life cycle, nymph comes out of the water and climbs the stem of emergent plant or reed or onto the rock and make itself in a vertical position. It slits open the weak spot of the skin and crawls out of its larval skin.

The newly emerged astonishing adult dragonflies has to wait for few hours or a day to get the wings dry and fly. This stage is called teneral. It is a hard state😔 for the dragonfly because its wings are weak and can’t able to fly. So, it becomes an easy target for the birds and other predators. Once again dragonfly becomes as a prey in its life cycle😲. Most of the dragonflies won’t survive this stage😳. If it gains a sufficient strength to fly, then once again it becomes as voracious predators. They become as a little beautiful eye-catching dragon. The lifespan of an adult is very short, just a few months.

Here Dragonfly survived various stages to become a complete adult dragonfly that has a very shorter lifespan. In a nymph stage, it doesn’t have an attractive look, and it lived in water but it accepted that life and survived with its predator skills. It passionately waited for years to become as beautiful dragonfly. It prepares its body and respiration system for the next phase of its life. After emerging as an adult dragonfly, it learns to survive in the earth surface. It learned to catch its prey on air, to do acrobats in air, and new defensive skills to protect from predators of earth surface. It accepts whatever the life brings and adapts with it. In simple terms, dragonfly lives its life instead of chasing it.

Chinese believes that dragonflies bring luck😍, harmony and prosperity in life. Japanese believes that they are the symbol of power, agility and victory💥💪. I believe that they are the symbol of beauty and wisdom💖😇.

Interesting facts about Dragonfly

Do you know❓❓

     >> Dragonflies have been around on the planet for more than 300 million years🙀. Dragonflies were quite big in size during the period of dinosaurs🦖 age😱. The dragonfly fossils found from the dinosaurs age had two and a half foot wingspan🐲.
     >> As per the fossils found that it is believed that dragonflies are the first winged insects in the earth👌.

     >> A dragonfly can move each wing independently. It has separate muscles to control each wing. This helps the dragonflies to take tight sharp turns without reducing its speed😃.

     >> A dragonfly can move all the 6 directions such as up, down, forward, backward and sideways of its body. It can also hover in the same place like a helicopter🚁🚁.

     >> Dragonfly beat its wings at the rate of 30 flaps per second. It can move with the speed of 30miles per hour. They are agile fliers😶.

     >> The neck muscles of the dragonfly have a very complicated structure. They can tilt their head 40 degrees down, 70 degrees back and almost 180 degrees on sideways.

     >> Dragonflies have almost 360 degrees vision. The large compound eyes have 24000 lenses (ommatidia) in each. Each lens acts separately and collects the information from all the sides. We have three opsins to see the colors and dragonflies are having 5 opsins. They can see the colors as we do and they can also see the UV light which is invisible for us.

     >> Dragonflies are predators and deadly hunters from birth. Their diet is small insects like mosquito, bees, butterflies, and other small insects, etc. It can eat 30 to 100 small insects in a day. It catches the prey on the air and crushes with its mandibles. They play an important role in maintaining an ecological system. They help to control the population of the small insects😊.

     >> Female dragonflies mate only with the adult dragonflies which hold a territory. So, male dragonflies have to establish and protect the territories on some water covered area like lake, ponds, stream or any freshwater catchment areas. They fight with other male dragonflies to defend its territory.

     >> Dragonflies have six legs. They don’t use the legs to walk instead they use it to land and catch its prey.

     >> The migration of the dragonflies reveals some fascinating details to us. Scientists tracked the migration of the dragonflies by attaching small transmitters on their body. The group of dragonflies traveled on average of 7.5miles per day. They traveled on every third day. One dragonfly traveled 100 miles in a single day. As per the records, the longest migration is done by the gold skimmer dragonfly and it’s around 11000 miles between India and Africa.
